Beasts and Vistas: Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone & The Northern Range

For the most reliable observation of wolves anywhere in the world, we follow the Lamar River Valley and Soda Butte Creek to Silver Gate through the Northern Range. The “Serengeti of North America”, this Yellowstone River watershed has the greatest density of carnivores in the western hemisphere. That’s because it is dense with antelope, bison and elk. See rutting bison, and perhaps even opportunistic bears and wolves. Stealthy mountain lions typically only leave tracks!

Start with a coffee stop in West Yellowstone then savor the views along the way, visiting the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and Upper and Lower Falls.

Then motor up the storied Dunraven Pass (8,878′) past Mt Washburn (10,243) where “the view from the summit is beyond all adequate description” (which you can add as an optional Park Short Hike!) Reenter the Yellowstone watershed at Antelope Creek and enjoy the views to Tower Falls. Then feel the mist.

Spy charismatic mega fauna along other-worldly riparian spaces before exiting the park at Silver Gate for lunch in Cooke City. Add a Beartooth Overnight, or return through the park via Mammoth Hot Springs for a soak in the nearby Boiling River, all before heading back to Big Sky.

All trips are private, fully customized and door-to-door in Big Sky. Full day trips are 8 hours with kayaking and hiking add-ons available.
